Health Practitioners Tribunal Bill 2010 for consultation

In July 2006, the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) agreed to establish a National Registration and Accreditation Scheme (national scheme) for health professionals.

The Inter-governmental Agreement signed by First Ministers at COAG provided that each State and Territory was to determine which entity in their particular jurisdiction would hear and determine notifications and appeals under the national scheme.

In May 2009, the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) published a consultation paper in relation to a preferred entity to handle notifications and appeals in Tasmania.

Following comments received during the consultation period, the Health Practitioners Tribunal Bill 2010 has been drafted. The legislation proposes the establishment of a stand-alone Tribunal in Tasmania, administered by the Department of Justice.
